Ahh cling wrap, we aren’t sure whether we hate to love you or love to hate you! Preventing against spills and splatters, cling wrap brilliantly preserves food, seals in necessary moisture and is always the right size. Cling wraps versatility has rendered it a staple not only in commercial kitchens but households around the world. Unfortunately, there is a downside. Traditional cling wraps are the epitome of ‘single use plastic’, difficult to recycle, made using toxic chemicals and difficult to break down.

Like other non-recyclables, cling film is destined to end up in landfill as a best case scenario, or polluting the land or ocean as a worst. In landfill or as general litter, cling wrap retains its form, releasing harmful chemicals for countless years against the changing conditions and posing a threat to wildlife.

Some Scary Statistics:

  • Since it’s uptake in the early 50’s cling wrap has contributed enormously to the wider plastic pollution crisis
  • Even when plastic wrap is recycled, it poses unique threats & issues. When it ends up in landfills or incinerators, both PVC and PVDC can release a highly toxic chemical called dioxin, according to the World Health Organization.
  • Plastic wrap is rarely recycled because it can clog machinery
  • When it eventually does break down, it forms tiny micro plastics that animals & sea life mistake for food
